One of the UK’s biggest retailers wanted help to improve its internal communications online. Having looked at sample copy from their intranet, on topics as varied as in-store marketing and charitable campaigns, I ran a half-day workshop for their internal comms staff. They already had a good style guide, but still wanted tips on writing and laying out text more effectively.

Professional organisation

When professional qualifications are involved, it’s easy to get bogged down in detail. The challenge for the web team was to make it easy for trainees to find the modules they needed and to introduce them clearly and succinctly. The team also provided members with news affecting their profession. We had two one-day sessions to work on samples of their material. Participants gained the confidence to prune and summarise much of what they had thought couldn’t be touched.

Software download and review website

This international website based in Barcelona provides advice on the latest apps and software as well as free downloads. Their English team needed to produce snappy copy that was useful and easy to understand. With two full days of training, we were able to cover a range of topics from the basics of writing in a non-linear medium, and writing summaries and headlines, to using interviews as source material, combining images with text most effectively and writing for search engines.
